Shadows and Reflections
The Lost ShellOn the coast of the Atlantic Ocean, on the outskirts of Holden Beach, lied a single solitary shell. Lying in the vast grainy sand, it was positioned in such a way that looked like it was facing the sun, soaking up the rays on that hot October afternoon. A young child was playing in the sand while her mother enjoyed her new Nicholas Sparks book in her beach chair. The child came up with a fabulous idea to build a sand castle, as do all children of youth. As she was gathering sand, this shell came into view, glittering in the sunlight out of the corner of her eye. She knew from then on, one must appreciate the small things in life, and that nature is much more valuable than one might notice. I chose to take a picture of this shell because it had a texture on it that I thought would make a nice sharp photo. I chose this composition because I wanted to capture the angle view of details on the outside of the shell. The feeling I am trying to convey is “the feeling of sand between your toes”. The detail of the sand can be shown in the view of the picture that you can almost feel the rough degraded rocks on the soles of your bare feet. I didn’t face many challenges, except to get the shadow in line and symmetrical the way I wanted. The success I had was getting the shell to have a texture of sharpness.
Early Bird SundayThe Vast Sunrise seemed to be waking up just as I now had. My younger sister woke me up at 5:30 on our final morning Upnorth and said “Get up we gotta get pictures of the sunrise! Quickly Quickly!”. I was reluctant due to the fact we stayed up really late on our last night. I slowly dragged myself away from my warm comforters and grabbed my camera off my nightstand. The sand was freezing when I took my first step. The sun had yet to rise and I was starting to shiver after 2 minutes. Then I saw it, the peak of a red circle, inch by inch revealing itself over the horizon. This light slowly changed the surrounding Horizon, until it became a variety of luminous colors. I snapped about 50 pictures at different angles and different stages that the sunrise had gone through. Finally I stated, “I’m ready for bed again” and we both walked slowly back to our beach house content with the sight of a beautiful event that we are blessed with every day. I chose this picture of sunrise because it represents a fond memory and captures, in my opinion, the reason why people get up so early. I chose this composition because I wanted to show both the sun and the horizon’s colors. The sun looked particularly red. I also wanted in the image the tall grass, to show land, so that it wasn't just all water, and completed the photo. The challenges I faced were lining up the horizon evenly, trying to center the sun in the middle of the photo, and trying to capture the visual of the ripples in the water. The accomplishments I concluded were capturing the vibrant colors, and keeping camera steady.
